Henna Artist Terms and Conditions
These were the Terms and Conditions that each henna artist in the Henna Heals database agreed to follow while we were operational (2010-2015). This list will give you a good "behind the scenes" look into some of our health and safety concens, and may help you develop some additional questions to ask an artist.
1. I will never use pre-packaged henna cones, mehndi oil, PPD, chemical dyes or food colouring in my henna paste.
2. I will not use henna powder that is meant for hair dying. I understand it is usually stale, unsifted, and may contain other ingredients that are unlisted and unsafe for skin.
3. I will use Certified Organic henna powder that is purchased from a reputable supplier and is stored in a cool dark place to retain staining strength. It contains no other ingredients other than henna.
4. I understand that if I choose to use any oil in my henna paste, I will use high-altitude lavandula angustifolia that contains a camphor level of less than 1%.
5. I agree that if I choose to use oil in my henna paste, I will use a maximum amount of half a teaspoon of lavandula angustifolia per 100g of henna powder. I understand that using more oil could possibly have a negative effect on my client’s health, especially after repeated use, due to the known toxic effects of camphor.
6. I understand that I need a gas chromatography reading to confirm the camphor level of my high-altitude lavandula angustifolia oil and that I can obtain this information from my oil manufacturer. I will not use any oil in my henna paste until I have personally received an official document from the oil manufacturer that confirms the camphor level is less than 1%.
7. I understand that using other essential oils (such as clove, eucalyptus, tea tree etc) in my henna paste could cause harm to my client (such as, but not limited to, skin irritation, allergic reaction, redness, itchiness, burning, pain), especially if used in large quantities. Furthermore, I understand that ingredients such as rosewater, tea, coffee, beet juice etc should not be used in case they conflict with the client’s medications, environments and/or treatments.
8. If I choose to use lemon juice in my henna paste, I will not use concentrated juice such as Realemon/Realime. I understand that they contain photosensitive citrus oil that will react to sunlight and may cause discomfort and/or dermatitis.
9. I understand that I should confirm whether the client has a known citrus allergy, in which case, I will not use any lemon juice in my henna paste recipe, I will use water, or a mild acidic substitute such as fresh apple juice, with the client’s consent and approval.
10. I agree to allow Henna Heals, any clients referred to me and their healthcare practitioners, to see a list of my henna paste ingredients, should they ask for it.
11. When applying the henna crown, I will use a fresh henna cone. If frozen, it can only frozen once to maintain staining power.
12. I understand that I am responsible for ensuring the safety of myself and of my client and that I will take the upmost care to ensure I am knowledgeable of the latest safety information regarding doing henna for people with possibly compromised immune systems.
13. I understand that I should not treat a client if I am unwell, as my illness could be contagious.
14. I understand I should always wash my hands and forearms with soap for at least 60 seconds immediately before doing a henna crown.
15. I agree that for the clients protection, I should clean the tip of the henna cone with an alcohol swab before I apply the henna paste to their head.
16. I agree that Henna Heals has provided the best resources available for safety and health information regarding the application of henna as of 2010, but cannot be held responsible for updating this information on an ongoing basis.
17. I understand that I will do my own research by speaking to health care professionals, licensed alternative health care professionals and clients before applying a henna crown to confirm that my henna recipe is safe.
18. I understand that Henna Heals is not my employer and this is not an employer/employee relationship. I understand that despite being referred to the client through Henna Heals, I represent my own business.
19. I agree that I will not hold Henna Heals responsible for my own negligence.
20. I agree that I will not take legal action against Henna Heals for any reason at any time.
21. I understand that is my own personal obligation to protect myself against legal action. I understand that Henna Heals recommends that I use a waiver that lists my henna paste ingredients, so that each client (and their medical team) can be made aware of anything that might cause an allergic reaction or conflict with their medication/treatment.
22. I understand that I should attempt to do a patch-test with each client 48 hours in advance, to confirm there are no sensitivities to my henna paste.
